An excellent day's racing and here are the thoughts of our Long Shot tipster on the big handicap of the day the Cesarewitch at Newmarket.

Manxman was on a real roll last season and won 5 handicaps out of 6 starts jumping from a mark of 46 to 79. He has come back this year in even better form and after a couple of decent efforts got his head in front at Southwell last time out. He kept on strongly that day over 2m 1/2f and won what looked a good race on paper. The extra distance today and the likely strong early pace plus the big galloping track at Newmarket are factors that should really play to his strengths. Being a 4-year old he could still have improvement in him and providing the occasion is not too much, he should be involved at the finish. Manxman rates a 4 star each way Pick.

J: Tom Marquand

Dawn Rising has been lightly raced this summer and in the main not been too competitive. However he showed last time out at the Curragh that he could be returning to some kind of form when staying on well to finish 5th of 30 in the Irish equivalent of this race. A smart hurdler, he has performed well in both codes in big race handicaps and it would be no surprise if connections, who have taken the trouble to book Tom Marquand for the ride, had him primed for a big run today. Dawn Rising rates a 4 star each way Pick.
