VERDICT: Mount Athos has won the two previous renewals of this race, both times following breaks, so it shouldn't matter that he has been off since finishing in mid-division in a Deauville Listed contest at the start of December. He picked up a similar prize there a month previously and is just 1lb higher than when successful 12 months ago. Roi De France found only the ill-fated Poker Face too good in the Hyde Stakes here, but Popmaster is weighted to get the better of him now 5lb better off for finishing just a neck away in third. Golden Mind pipped Heathcliff over 6f before being outclassed in the Lady Wulfruna at Wolverhampton.
