VERDICT: American Bay has posted some useful efforts this season but this step back down to 6f can see this habitual keen-racer get his head in front. Harry Charlton's gelding would have finished a lot closer to the eventual winner had he been granted a clear run when finishing a never-nearer fourth over 7f in a Newbury handicap and looks the one to be with. Saint Matthew is surely better than he showed when finishing down the field over 5f at Ripon and he is respected having been gelded since that run, while Arabic Song completes the shortlist visored for the first time.
